MomoBUTOH Dance Co PERFORMANCE

A visceral voyage through the inner and outer landscapes and polarities that can break us and make us who we are. Like the raging floods, whirling tornadoes, rumbling fires and quaking earth, our bodies and souls also dance with these forces of change. How can we locate peace within the storm?

With intimacy and honesty this premiere of “Alchemy of Opposites” spontaneously reveals the alchemy between essences of our most exquisite, delicious, and destructive human natures. Featuring live soundscape by Bobby Levy of Houston and Kait Chenowith of Costa Rica and BUTOH dance by Odile Nicole of New Orleans, Norianna Diesel of Salt Lake City and Maureen Momo Freehill of Seattle.

MomoButoh Dance Company is in its 11th year as a catalyst for personal and cultural awakening through embodied art performances. Founded and directed by Maureen Momo Freehill, MFA, we are directly inspired and informed by the lineage of Japanese BUTOH masters Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno, combining dance and performance art influences of East and West, along with live evocative soundscapes and landscapes to invoke an intimate experience of body and soul that highlights the full range of our human nature.

Maureen is also founder and artistic director of BUTOPIA Center for Embodied Arts in Nature & SOMA Sanctuary of Moving Arts on Whidbey Island, WA (www.butopia.org). For 30 years she has been teacher, personal mentor & coach for creative souls and life artists worldwide. Working intimately with the illuminating path and tools of the Gene Keys (www.embodygenius.net), she offers profoundly practical guidance to embody the dance of fun, fluency and grace in our daily lives. She brings unique passion for the natural world to her work as performer, educator & director of somatic and spiritual practice & performance.

Ayla Nereo (solo)
Ayla Nereo’s voice hits straight to the heart. With an array of loop-pedals by her side, she layers vocal melodies into majestic, sweeping harmonies and weaves magical threads of guitar, kalimba, piano, and percussion into each live performance. Her lucid storytelling and lyrical imagery are water for the thirsty soul; sounds embodying the many folds of our own selves. Ayla’s music is both timeless and modern; circle songs and roots music meet folktronica. Crafting an immersive soundscape we can rest in, her gentle intention guides us into a more open and receptive state. Each performance is a journey: an inspired, wondrous experience that holds you by the heart and doesn’t let go.
